The BDO report is based on risk factors cited in recent Securities & Exchange Commission filings by America's top one hundred publicly held retailers.

An overwhelming majority (99%) of these major store chains cite industry competition and consolidation as a major threat.

Chief among their concerns is the realisation that “right sizing” the number of physical stores they operate is imperative, which has led to the recent closure of thousands of stores as well as steep reductions in headcounts.

A majority of these stores (69%) cite the risks of owning and leasing real estate, while 44% name mall traffic and competition for prime real estate as a significant risk.
